I'm reading a book called YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND, by Deborah Tannen--about the differences in the ways men and women communicate. It's fascinating, scary stuff, let me tell you. She says that men see everything in regard to power and hierarchy, while women see everything in terms of connecting and relationships. No news there, I guess, but when she starts showing examples, it gets scary-weird.

Anyway, I'm not even halfway through it, but I'm hoping it will explain the situation below. In the meantime, I'm asking you, my fellow bloggers, to weigh in. Let's see if the response lines up along genders.

Biggy is addicted to the SORBA site (it's a mountain biking thing), especially the forum. Imagine a bunch of grown men chatting it up about forks and hardtails--titillating! Anyway, I saw that he was bragging about how he NEVER falls, so I asked, "What about the spill you took last weekend, the one I just happened to photograph?" To which he responded, "That wasn't really a fall."

So I ask you: FALL OR NO FALL?

if that isn't a fall:

a) he must have laid down to take a nap
b) is pretending to be a fetus in the woods
c) y'all were reenacting the story of the good samaritan and he was the guy who was beaten up and robbed.

Oh please, that's just a little re-grouping (dudes know that) - it's not a fall unless it's an ass over teacup over handlebars enjambment, you know, where you have to get a new helmet and shit . . . and if you think I'm gonad-poisoned . . . hey, I watch Project Runway just like Sharon Olds said she did the other night . . . ;)

m. --My husband paid you, obviously.

That's defnitely a fall, and I'm not at all surprised it happened. Men think with their junk. Obviously Greg had a lot on his mind, so his junk went into overload, fell out of balance, and voila. It's shocking we don't see accidents like this more often

Looks like a fall to me. Tell him to get his ass up! :)

minus five, I need you to come down on one side or the other here. Biggy will use the ambiguity provided by your sarcasm to his advantage.

NO FALL.

And it's TITillating.

anon--obviously a man. but a good speller.

NOT a fall. Maybe a slip, a stumble, a misstep, a trip, or even a falter, a careen, a totter or a tilt but by no means a FALL.

Oh, come on Greg. A rose is a rose and a fall is a fall. You FELL.

That's not a fall. He's dabbing with his shoulder.

You busted ass idiot.....definitely a fall

Anonymous said...

so obviously not a fall. He appears to be simply looking for his dignity.

NOT A FALL.

You don't use your face for falls, so NOT A FALL

Yeah, well I'm thinking we won't count any ANONYMOUS votes, since it could be the same individual over and over. Besides, if you're too big a kitty to reveal your identity, we're going to have trouble establishing your gender anyway...

he's your husband? Damn! um, you don't happen to need a line-breaks coach do you?

That is totally a fucking fall. I am an expert in falling and I can fall on completely flat surfaces. That, my friend, is a fall.

if he would use my sarcasm as an excuse to think i was on his side, that's even more pathetic. of course it was a fall.

sorry, buddy. i'll take your side next time if you have a better case. too bad johnny cochran is dead, he could have helped you.

Timber, He fell like Joan Rivers face on a hot day.

yes, I guess that was a flat-out flirt more than a compliment . . . (trying to impress your gurlfriends) . . . anyway, I've moved on from "the fall" and am entering Boy George territory (tumble for ya) - whups, my junk was thinking again, hmmm was I waving or drowning . . .

Sorry bro, that's a fall. Lame as it may appear, the bike is horizontal, and you didn't do it off a table top jump.

That's definitely not a fall. You see, what he told me was that he was standing in the woods with his bike..and all of a sudden, his love for you hit him like a ton of bricks. Knocked that poor boy straight on his buttocks. But definitely not a fall.

Jury, please allow the defendant to present his case. True, before this incident, I may have spoken of not falling on my bike in the past year. Post incident, I actually posted on SORBA about this, er, shoulder dab, which was the result of being blinded by my wife's beauty, intellect, and prose.

What my wife fails to mention is the totally awesome 4' drops I was landing smooth as butter. And Georgia, BITE ME!!!:)

I wanted to side with your husband, but on closer inspection of the enlarged photo, he clearly dropped like a sack of potatoes (read: fall).

In MTBing, an rugged outdoor activity, being/ending up on the ground is a daily occurrence. Just like the Eskimos have many words for snow, mtbers have many words for being/ending up on the ground. In this situation, this does not quailify as a fall.

I've gotta get that special mountain biker's dictionary.

Let him call it a Soil sample if that makes him feel better about falling on a beginner trail.

That Sorba group is pretty lame. It's full of barney's, posers & brand whores. They're having a big circle jerk over there now because some guy got 3000 post. Too bad it's the only site to get local trail info on.

dictionary here
